About this expedition

Broad Peak is an 8,000-metre peak beside K2, reached by the classic Baltoro approach through Askole, Paiju, Urdukas, Goro II and Concordia. The normal route is the West Ridge, climbed from a base camp on the Godwin-Austen Glacier.

It is generally thought of as less technical than K2, but the route still means crevasse management, fixed lines, high camps and a long, exposed summit day. This is a mountain for experienced climbers stepping into 8,000 m terrain, not a first expedition.

Who this expedition is for

Climbers with previous high-altitude expedition experience who want a major Karakoram objective with full local logistics. You should be confident with crampons, fixed ropes and glacier travel, and able to look after yourself in cold, remote conditions.

Route notes

  • Approach along the Baltoro Glacier to a base camp near K2 Base Camp.
  • Normal plan uses staged camps on the standard West Ridge route.
  • Weeks of acclimatisation rotations, rest days and weather holds before any summit attempt.

Mountain history

9 June 1957 — First ascent. Hermann Buhl, Kurt Diemberger, Marcus Schmuck and Fritz Wintersteller made the first ascent. The small Austrian team climbed without supplementary oxygen and without high-altitude porters.

5 March 2013 — First winter ascent. Four Polish climbers reached the main summit in winter. Two of them, Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski, died on the descent.
